They are impregnated with intumescent material, which when hot begins to expand and char. This insulates the substrate and creates a fire barrier.
You should seek advice from the fire risk assessor or building control inspector to see whether an insulation rating would be needed in your situation.
Some fire curtains can also be classified as smoke curtains. For example, the Envirograf Insulated Fire Barrier Curtain is deemed an insulated fire and smoke barrier in certain scenarios.
