Door Closers

With regards to door closers, we are a distributor of Rutland and Boss Door Controls products.

We can supply all types of door closers, including rack and pinion (otherwise known as scissor arm) door closers, cam action (otherwise known as slide arm) door closers and electromagnetic door closers.

What type of door closer do I need?

Rack and pinion, or scissor arm, door closers, are the most common door closers. This is because they can offer an 180 degree opening angle. They can be installed easily on doors where air pressure would mean that the door will not fully close. This is through adjusting the closing force and also by reversing the shoe on the triangular bracket.

We advise installing them on the pull size of a door, to maximise the power size.

Cam action door closers can also be power adjusted, however they aren’t as versatile as rack and pinion door closers. On the other hand, they are designed to be more visually attractive.

Electromagnetic door closers only operate when the fire alarm sounds, so are ideal for using where a door must be open for long periods.

Does a fire door need a door closer?

FD30, FD60, FD90 and FD120 fire doors in public buildings and blocks of flats/ tower blocks usually require a door closer. Please check with your building inspector what door furniture is needed.

What does “back check” mean on a door closer?

When a door closer has a back check function, this means that the door closer’s ability to open fully can be adjusted. This is to avoid it coming into contact with a partition/objects as it opens.

Usually there is a back check valve which can be adjusted.

Fire rated hinges

We can supply a whole range of fire rated hinges, appropriate for different sized doors. 3 hinges must be used on any fire door and installed with hinge pads.

Our most popular hinges are Grade 13 Ball Bearing Hinges, which can take a 120kg door.

Before purchasing hinges, you must know the weight and dimensions of your door.

We would also advise checking the security and durability needed.
