CHAR 21 – Intumescent Fire Protection for Timber
CHAR 21 is a low-VOC, waterborne intumescent coating that provides Euroclass B-s1-d0 fire protection for timber substrates ≥10mm. It develops a strong, stable char for long-term resistance and is approved by LEED, BREEAM, CAM, and French VOC standards.

CHAR 21 is a low-VOC, waterborne intumescent coating designed to provide superior fire protection for timber and wood-based substrates. Its advanced formula combines high active solids content, exceptional char strength, and nanofillers, ensuring rapid development of a stable, insulating char that delivers long-lasting fire resistance.

Tested and certified to Euroclass B-s1-d0, CHAR 21 offers reliable fire protection while maintaining excellent environmental performance. It has been independently assessed and approved by EN 16000 (indoor emissions), ISO 89011-2 (VOC content), LEED, BREEAM, CAM, French VOC standards, and more.

Application Guidelines

  • For timber, apply 250g (200ml) per m² in a single coat to achieve the rating (always check wet film thickness during application).

  • Stir mechanically before use for smooth, consistent flow.

  • Can be thinned with up to 5% water if necessary (generally not required).

  • Brush/roller applications may require additional coats compared to spray.

  • Maintain correct environmental conditions during application and drying.

Primers & Topcoats

  • Bare Timber: No primer required.

  • Previously Painted Surfaces: Use Wall Primer 3500, thinned as directed, for proper adhesion.

  • Topcoats: Not required in C1 (internal warm dry environments) but may be applied decoratively (approval required). For C2 and above, an approved topcoat is mandatory.

Certification & Testing

  • Reaction to Fire: Euroclass B-s1-d0.

  • Standards: EN 13501-1, EN 13823:2020+A1:2022.

  • Certified for all wood and wood-based substrates (≥10mm) and all flammable substrates rated A2 or better, with performance achieved at 250 g/m².
